Foreign Language

• In Private Efdal Primary School, foreign language is taught through the use of audio and visual instruments.

• Our institution has 9 foreign language teachers, all graduates of eligible universities of whom two are native speakers with pedagogical formations (teaching certificates).

• Starting from 4 year-old group in kindergarten, applied courses within the English programme are directed by native speakers of English. Until the end of 5th grade, our students' academic skills and motivation are kept at its highest. At this point its been observed that our students are actively able to use the four skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). With this, foreign language usage capacity of our students increase rapidly. At the end of 8th grade, our students are able to understand what they read, produce compositions with introduction-body-conclusion of 200-250 words, apply English to their daily lives, watch and understand films, documentaries, competitions, shows on TV channels that broadcast in English.

Foreign Language Activities

To help our students approach English, not as just a lesson but as a part of their lives, our English programme has various distinctions. These distinctions are as follows:

• Activity Hours: The lessons in activity hours are designed to be hands on (kinaesthetic learning) and are usually conducted out of class (garden, sports hall, canteen, music room, art room, science lab, etc.) or in class with a different physical set up. For example: to teach the imperatives, the lesson can be carried out in the kitchen of the canteen making a cake. Or, the classroom can be set up like a restaurant and the students can practice different roles such as waiter, cashier, customer, etc.

• Power Point Presentations: These are done in kindergarten- 5th grade. The aim is to revise what has already been learned through the use of computers by power point presentations. The students are quite attentive to these presentations due to the fact that they use audio-visual effects.

• Storytelling: Believing that storytelling is an important technique in understanding, remembering and communicating, it is implemented from kindergarten to 5th grade according to a lesson plan.

• Reading Hours: Starting from 2nd to 5th grade, they are done once a week. Students choose various reading books from their in-class English library and fill out a 'Book Report' to be evaluated by their teacher. Every month the students who have read the most books are awarded 'Reader of the Month' certificate.

• Skills: Starting from kindergarten, every class level has two hours of skill lessons intended for reading, understanding, speaking and listening, directed by native speakers of English who have pedagogical formation. The aim of these lessons which involve various games is for our students to experience English in the presence of a native speaker who has the culture of the second language. This also provides the students with an opportunity to develop their confidence and speaking skills.

• English Day: On this day parents are invited to see their children in theatrical plays, short films, and musicals that they have prepared for all year long.

• Individual Tutoring: Just as in Turkish, Maths, Science and Social Studies, students’ incompetencies are dealt with throughout the year via individual teaching sessions by their teachers. These sessions are topic based and may continue until there's an improvement on a certain topic / skills or may be planned to be held through out the academic year.

• Vocabulary Evaluation: Applied in 2nd and 3rd grade, students get a chance to revise and remember the vocabulary they learn through out the academic year by various competitions, tournaments, and games that take place twice a semester.

• Monthly Theme Parties: Applied in 1st grade at the end of every unit, these parties aim to revise the topic and activate the students. For example: if the unit's theme is clothes, the students may come to school with free dress code on the party day. In the English lessons the topic and acquisitions are reinforced through various games.

• The English department provides educational tools which have been imported after much research, that are used in every level. For example, the talking pen (Say Pen) which helps students listen to what they are reading, is one of the students’ favourites. It helps in pronunciation and revision of learnt structures. Digital quiz books, a magic sphere that prepares quiz shows between the students, also adds colour to the English department.

• Activities to prepare the students for the placement test (SBS) are done in 4th - 8th grade. Preparative tests are evaluated in terms of class level, and individual level. After each test the teacher determines who need extra revision for the particular topic.

• To help our students understand the importance of learning a foreign language through experience and helping them increase their self-confidence, summer school programmes abroad are planned every year.
